Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Taylor was born about 1853 in Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland.

She married James Ross, a labourer, in Dalry in 1878 and they had two children before they emigrated to Otago in 1883 on the Nelson.

They settled in Fairfield where they had a further five children and where Margaret signed the suffrage petition.

James worked as a coal miner then later in life as a wool classer.

Margaret died at her daughter’s home in Caversham on 8 March 1932 and James died in 1935 – they are buried together in the Green Island Cemetery.
