Mary Sophia Muir was born in 1865 in New Zealand – the daughter of John Muir and Mary Sophia Russell.
She married Frederick Thomas Horne, an accountant, on 1 July 1886 at her parents’ home in Musselburgh, Dunedin.
They had three children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in College St, Caversham, Dunedin.
In September 1895 Frederick was charged with embezzling £100 from his employer - a £100 reward was offered.
He was captured in February the following year while attempting to board a boat bound for Australia and was sentenced to four years in prison.
In 1899 the family moved to Timaru where Frederick died in 1922 and Mary died on 2 September 1927 - they are buried in the Timaru Cemetery.
