Margaret Boyle was born about 1851 in Ayrshire, Scotland.
She married Archibald Smith, a plasterer, on 31 December 1866 in Stevenston, Ayrshire and they had four children, one who died in infancy.
In 1875 the family, along with three of Archibald’s younger siblings, emigrated to New Zealand on the Hannibal.
They had a further five children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Frederick St, Dunedin.
Archibald died in 1920 and Margaret died at her daughter’s home in Dunedin on 12 April 1935, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
