Margaret McAllan was born about 1849 in Glasgow – the daughter of Thomas McAllan, a weaver, and Jessie Stirling.

She married George Watt, a shoemaker, in 1871 and they had two children before the family emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Timaru

A further four children were born before George died in 1889.

When Margaret signed the suffrage petition she was living in Arthur St, Mornington.

She died on 15 July 1919 and is buried with George in the Northern Cemetery.
