Isabella Jane Nicholson was born on 17 May 1865 in Dumfries, Scotland – the daughter of Robert Nicholson, a grocer, and Mary Richardson.
She emigrated to New Zealand with her family in 1883 on the British Queen and they settled in Dunedin.
Isabella married Walter Phillips Macdougall on 19 September 1890 and they had four children.
When she signed the suffrage petition Isabella was living with her family at Primrose Villa in George St, Dunedin & Walter was working as a clerk.
When Walter died in 1919 his occupation was given as confectioner.
Isabella died on 5 October 1951 and she is buried with Walter in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
