Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Betsy Ann/Annie Nichol Ferguson Whyte was born on 5 August 1850 in Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Whyte, a proprietor of land, and Margaret Laing.

She married William Macildowie, a clerk, on 9 October 1879 in Glasgow and they emigrated to New Zealand.

When Annie signed the suffrage petiton she was living in Allandale Rd, St Clair, Dunedin.

In 1894 William committed suicide 'while temporarily insane'.

Annie died later that year on 29 December – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
