Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:
Mrs Magee was probably Catherine Magee, wife of Bernard Magee. In 1876 Bernard applied for a liquor licence for the Criterion Hotel on Ribble Street in Ōamaru but was denied. Based on this it is safe to assume that he would not have been in favour of the temperance movement. However, Bernard died in 1893 and so perhaps this left Catherine free to sign the Petition.
