Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Arbuckle was born about 1827 in Scotland.

She married Alexander McArthur, a dyer, on 28 January 1849 in Lanarkshire and they had six sons, three who died in childhood or infancy, before Alexander also died about 1865.

Margaret remarried on 4 January 1866 to Thomas Marr. They had twin daughters and a son before they emigrated to Otago about 1870.

When Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living at Saddle Hill near Dunedin and Thomas was working as a miner.

Thomas died in Dunedin in 1914 and Margaret died at her home at Saddle Hill on 29 March 1915 – they are buried together in the Green Island Cemetery.
