Margaret Wright was born about 1853 in Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Wright, an agricultural labourer, and Margaret Martin.
She married William Murray in 1878 and they had a son later that year.
They emigrated to Otago in 1879 on the Invercargill and settled at Millers Flat in Central Otago where they were living when Margaret signed the suffrage petition.
William worked on gold dredges, rising to the position of manager and they had a further nine children.
They lived for a time in Lawrence before moving to Gore in the 1900s where Margaret died on 28 December 1921.
William died in 1936 – they are buried together in the Gore Cemetery.
