Barbara Gillespie was born on 17 August 1849 in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scotland – the daughter of Charles Gillespie, a hand loom weaver, and Elizabeth Scott.
She married joiner, John Marshall on 14 August 1874 in Kirkintilloch and they had four sons, one who died aged five years, before the family emigrated to Otago in 1884 on the Victory.
They settled in Dunedin where they had a further two sons and when Barbara signed the suffrage petition they were living in Waverley St, South Dunedin.
Barbara died on 11 March 1916 and John died in 1923 – they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
