Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Muir was born about 1855 in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

She married Hugh Gray in 1874 and they had three children before the family emigrated to Otago in 1883 on the Nelson.

They settled at Walton Park, near Fairfield, where they had a further five children, Hugh worked as a miner and Mary signed the suffrage petition.

In the 1910s the family moved to North East Valley in Dunedin where Mary died on 23 December 1913 and Hugh died in 1935 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
