Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane/Jean White was born about 1832 in Riccarton, Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of William White, a coal miner, and Margaret Armstrong.

She married Andrew McCrorie, also a coal miner, on 30 December 1853 in Riccarton.

They emigrated to New Zealand in the 1860s and settled in Fairfield where Andrew died in 1885 – he is buried in the Green Island Cemetery.

Jane signed the suffrage petition in Fairfield. She died in the Caversham Benevolent Institute on 28 April 1896 and is buried in the Southern Cemetery.
