Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Edith Iremonger was born in 1863 in Lambeth, Surrey – the daughter of Thomas Iremonger, a police sergeant, and Ellen Gane.

She emigrated to Canterbury in 1883 on the Waitangi and she married James Gray McDougall, a joiner, in 1887. They had four children and when Edith signed the suffrage petition they were living in Greymouth.

A few years later, the family moved to Wanganui where James died in 1925.

Edith died on 20 June 1953 – they are buried together in the Aramoho Cemetery.
