Helen Hunter Morrison was born about 1822 in Renfrewshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Morrison and Agnes Gardner Fortune.
She married Hugh McFadzen, a cooper’s clerk, about 1848.
In February 1849 they boarded the Mariner to sail to Otago - their first child Agnes was born on board the ship.
They settled in Dunedin and had a further seven children.
Hugh died in 1884 & when Helen signed the suffrage petition she was living in Sunnydale, North East Valley.
Helen died at her daughter’s home in Timaru on 5 March 1896 – she is buried with Hugh in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
