Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Isabella Crow was born on 3 April 1837 in Montrose, Forfarshire, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Crow, a blacksmith, and Jane Kidd. Isabella’s family emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1857 on the 'Lady Milton'.

In 1861 Isabella married James McGeorge. They had two sons in Australia before they came to New Zealand in about 1864, and another three children were born in New Zealand. Their sons were successful gold dredge operators in Central Otago, and their daughter Jane also signed the suffrage petition.

Isabella died on 29 August 1909 at her home 'Barlay', 161 Maitland St, and James died in 1918. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
