Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Campbell was born on 21 March 1859 in Halkirk, Caithness, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Campbell, a shepherd, & Barbara McIvor.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1875 on the Invercargill and she married cattle-dealer Andrew McGill on 29 June 1877 in Dunedin.

They had 10 children, one who died in infancy, and when Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Brighton Road, Green Island.

Andrew died at the Dunedin Hospital in 1923 – he is buried in the Green Island Cemetery.

Jane died at Palmerston North on 5 October 1938 – she is buried with one of her daughters in the Kelvin Grove Cemetery.
