Alice Johnstone was born in 1866 in New Zealand – the daughter of John Johnstone, a boiler maker, and Catherine Green.
She married, clerk, James Govan McGregor on 16 August 1887 in Knox Church, Dunedin.
They had two children and when Alice signed the suffrage petition they were living in Cumberland Street.
In 1912 they moved to Queenstown and took over the licence of the Supreme Court Hotel.
They remained there for two years until James’ health meant a move to Wellington where he died in 1914.
Alice remained in Wellington where she died on 27 March 1938 – she is buried with James in the Karori Cemetery.
