Margaret Stewart was born about 1837 in Logierait, Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of Charles Stewart, a farmer, and Grace Reid.
She married John McLean, a meal miller, on 26 July 1867 in Logierait.
They had five children before the family emigrated to New Zealand in the mid 1870s and a further three children were born after their arrival.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Felix St, North East Valley, Dunedin.
Margaret died on 21 August 1908 and John died in 1931, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
