Catherine/Kate Gillespie Mahone was born in New Zealand in 1866 – the daughter of Robert Mahone and Mary Hughan.
She had a son with John McLennan, a storeman, in 1885 and married John in 1886. They had three further children and, when she signed the suffrage petition, Kate was living with her family in Maitland St, Dunedin.
She died at the Dunedin Hospital on 6 December 1896.
John re-married and he died in 1944. They are both buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
