Catherine Brown was born about 1842 in Lanarkshire, Scotland – the daughter of Thomas Brown, a coal miner, and Ellison.
She had a son in 1859 and, on 5 December 1862, she married Thomas McMillan, a blacksmith.
They had seven children before the family emigrated to Otago in 1880 on the Marlborough.
They had three more children after their arrival, one who died in infancy.
When Catherine signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Vire St, Dunedin.
She died at her home on 1 May 1909 and Thomas died in 1918, they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
