Elizabeth Symes was born in1860 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Robert Symes and Elizabeth Henderson.

She came to New Zealand with her family and they settled at Blue Spur near Lawrence.

She married John Olsen Moen, a miner, in 1877 and they had seven children, one who died in infancy.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Waitahuna Gully.

John died in 1925 and Elizabeth died at her home in Waitahuna on 1 July 1930, they are buried in the family grave in the Waitahuna Cemetery.
