Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Bridget Scully was born about 1832 in Ireland. She married Michael Moloney and they emigrated to Tasmania, Australia about 1858.

Their son John was born in Cape Town, South Africa on the voyage. The Moloney family had eight children while living in Tasmania, one who died young.

Michael worked as a police constable but was dismissed from the force in 1870 for drunkenness. He then became a licenced victualler running the Tasmanian Inn in Perth, Tasmania then the Queens Arms Hotel in Longford. The Queens Arms was sold in 1876 and the family came to Dunedin shortly after.

In 1877 Michael was granted a licence for the Andersons Bay Hotel and the family were at the Queens Arms Hotel in 1879 where their daughter Bridget Ann died.

They moved from the hotel in 1880 and, in 1892 took up the licence of the Royal Albert Hotel in George St.

This is where the family were living when Bridget signed the suffrage petition, they stayed until 1896 when the licence was transferred.

Michael died in 1900 and Bridget died on 9 September 1914. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
