Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Doogan/Dougan was born about 1854 in Dungannon, County Tyrone, Ireland.

She emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Sussex, also on board was her future husband Neil McCulloch, a metal worker from Scotland.

They married in 1877 and had seven children.

When Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Maia, West Harbour, Dunedin.

In 1899 their house was destroyed by a fire caused when a tin of tar boiled over on the range in the kitchen. The piano was the only thing to be saved.

In February 1917 Neil was cycling to his work in Dunedin when he was knocked down by a motor cyclist. His skull was fractured and he died in Dunedin Hospital later that day.

Margaret died a few months later on 2 July, she is buried with Neil in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
