Emilie Adele Dorine Petersen was born about 1858 in Denmark.
She emigrated to New Zealand where she married Peter August Nelson in 1881.
They had four children before Peter died in 1887.
When Emilie signed the suffrage petition she was living in Hawthorne Terrace, Mornington in Dunedin.
Her only son died in France during the First World War.
Emilie died at her home in Dunedin on 28 January 1939 – she is buried with Peter in the Southern Cemetery.
