Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Stewart was born about 1852 in Scotland - she emigrated to New Zealand in the 1870s and settled in the Winton district in Southland.

She later moved to Dunedin and married Ezra Newall, a picture framer, in 1886.

They had seven sons and one daughter and the family were living in St Andrew St when Mary signed the suffrage petition.

Mary founded Newall’s Dainty China Shop in the 1890s which continued to be run by family members after her death.

Ezra died in 1928 and Mary died on 15 June 1940.

'For her great kindness to people in sickness or distress Mrs Newall was widely known, and never failed to heed a call day or night.'

She is buried with Ezra in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
