Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Phillippa Trevorah was born in 1838 in Illogan, Cornwall – the daughter of Richard Trevorah, a copper miner, and Mary Ann Rogers.
She married James Allen, also a copper miner, on 13 October 1864 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Copper House.
They emigrated to New Zealand around 1868 and settled at Nelson Creek on the West Coast where they had two daughters.
They later moved to Cobden where Phillippa signed the suffrage petition.
James died in 1903 and Phillippa died at her daughter’s home in Cobden on 19 November 1917 – they are buried together in the Karoro Cemetery.
Phillippa’s obituary said 'there were many silent though eloquent tokens of the esteem in which the deceased had been held'.
