Mary McGrath was born about 1854 in Tipperary, Ireland.

She emigrated to New Zealand and married Patrick Fogarty, a maltster, in 1880.

They had eight children, one who died in infancy, and lived in Dunedin.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Athol Place.

Mary died on 27 January 1904 and Patrick died in 1918, they are buried with their daughter in the Southern Cemetery.
