Mary/Maria Phelan was born about 1858, probably in Ireland.

She emigrated to New Zealand where she married, farmer, Patrick Horan in 1881.

They had nine children and when Maria signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Coal Creek, near Greymouth.

Maria died at her home on 20 June 1902 leaving a young family.

Patrick died in 1920 when he fell from the Cobden bridge which was being repaired.

They are buried in the Karoro Cemetery.
