Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret McDonald was born about 1856. She married James Plunkett, a carter, on 6 October 1880 at St Joseph’s Church, Dunedin.

They had 14 children, four of who died in infancy or early childhood.

When Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Smith St, Caversham.

James died in 1904. In 1912, Margaret’s oldest daughter Annie, then a nun working in Western Australia, died. Her oldest son John was killed in action in 1917 during the First World War.

Margaret died on 30 July 1929. She is buried with James in a family grave in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
