Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ellen Glynn was born in about 1842. She married George Poppleton, a butcher, in Victoria, Australia in 1859.

They had two daughters in Australia before emigrating to New Zealand in about 1865 where they had a further seven children. When she signed the suffrage petition Ellen was living with her family in York Place, Dunedin.

Her husband died in 1895. She married William Taylor, a surveyor’s chainman, in 1902.

Ellen died on 22 May 1912 at her home in Arthur St; William died in 1914. They are both buried in the Southern Cemetery – Ellen with her family, and William with his first wife and children.
