Anne Eliza nee Knox was born 25th April 1852 and baptised 19th of May that year in Belturbet Co Cavan Ireland. She was the fourth child and daughter of James and Margaret Knox. Anne arrived at Port Chalmers Dunedin on the 'James Nicol Fleming' in 1875 with an older sister Margaret (Mrs J D Wilson) as a colonial nominated immigrant - they had two brothers (John James and William) who came to NZ the year prior. They also had aunts and uncles already in Dunedin. Anne (she was known as Annie in NZ) worked as a dressmaker. In June 1878 she married Edward Porteous and they had their family as noted above. Anne died Dec 1931 and was buried in the Northern Cemetery Dunedin with her husband who died in 1896 aged 44 years
