Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Alice Bailey was born about 1866.

She married George Pountley, a ship’s steward, in New South Wales, Australia in 1885 and they had a daughter the following year.

In 1887 a warrant was issued for George’s arrest for 'unlawfully deserting his wife'.

Sometime after this the couple reunited as their second daughter was born in 1890 in New Zealand.

When Alice signed the suffrage petition they were living in Athol Place, Dunedin.

George died in Balmain, New South Wales in 1913 – he is buried in the Rookwood Catholic Cemetery.

Alice died on 1 June 1925 in Sydney – she is buried in the Randwick General Cemetery.
