Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Helen Grant was born about 1844 in Perthshire, Scotland, the daughter of James Grant, a potato merchant, and Jean Taylor.

Helen emigrated to New Zealand with her family in the 1860s and they settled near Outram on the Taieri Plain near Dunedin. She married Richard Lyon, a storeman, in 1881.

They had no children.

When she signed the suffrage petition Helen was living in Lower Cargill St, Dunedin in Ivy Lodge, a boarding house that the Lyon’s ran.

Richard died in 1915 and Helen died on 29 June 1936. They are buried together in the West Taieri Cemetery
