Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Ellen Clarke was born about 1867 in Australia – the daughter of Robert John Roper Clarke and Mary Ann Frazer. The family moved to Dunedin shortly after Ellen’s birth.
On 16 November 1887 Ellen married Robert Moore Hueston, a chemist, at her parent’s house. They lived in George St and had four children, two dying in infancy.
In 1906 the family moved to Napier where Robert had purchased a business. After only two weeks Robert died suddenly, and an inquest gave the verdict of suicide.
Ellen, with her children, moved back to Dunedin then later to Auckland where her daughter Hilda died in 1910, aged 18.
Ellen died on 25 March 1917 in Dunedin. She is buried in the Northern Cemetery with her infant daughters.
