Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Mary Dalzell was born in 1852 in Cockermouth, Cumberland, England – the daughter of Joseph Dalzell, a butcher, and Mary Ann Highmore.

Mary had a daughter in 1877 and in the 1880’s she emigrated to New Zealand with her daughter.

She married seaman, Daniel Holliday Renkin on 20 March 1887 at All Saints Church in Dunedin.

They had four children and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Blacks Road, North East Valley, Dunedin.

Shortly after, they moved to Wellington where Daniel died in 1912. Mary died on 8 July 1930 – she is buried with Daniel in the Karori Cemetery.
