Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Ann Cranley was born in 1865 in New Zealand – the daughter of John Cranley, a hotelkeeper, and Jane Oxley.

She married George Riddall, a miner, in 1886 and they had six children, one who died in infancy.

In 1893 George died from consumption and when Mary signed the suffrage petiton the family were living in Blue Spur, near Lawrence.

Mary married James McKay, a storekeeper, on 20 February 1895 in the Lawrence Parish.

In the early 1900s the family left Otago and moved to Wellington where Mary died on 16 February 1915, she is buried in the Karori Cemetery.

James’ place & date of death are unknown.
