Catherine White was born about 1840 in County Clare, Ireland. She married Henry John Ripp, a waterman, in Woolwich, Kent, England in 1864.

In 1874, Catherine and Henry emigrated to Otago on the Christian McAusland.

Catherine and Henry ran a second hand shop in South Dunedin. They had no children. When Henry died in 1909, Catherine continued with the shop.

She died on 25 August 1924 and is buried in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
