Amelia James was born in 1857 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of John Edward James and Jane Yarkin Freeman. Her parents had married in New Zealand and gone to Victoria in about 1853. The family returned to New Zealand in 1862. Amelia married Arthur Frank Robertshaw, a cabinetmaker, in 1882. They had five children and lived in Canongate St in Dunedin.
Amelia died on 13 August 1923 at her home. She is buried in the Dunedin Northern Cemetery.
Arthur re-married and he died in Wellington in 1933
