Sarah Martha Trengrove was born in Victoria, Australia in 1871, the daughter of John Trengrove, a blacksmith, and Sarah Vasey.
When Sarah was two years old, her father died when he was thrown from his horse and fractured his skull.
Sarah came to Otago three months later with her mother and two siblings.
Sarah married Thomas Fitzpatrick, a member of the Permanent Artillery, in 1890. They had four children.
When Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Scott St, St Kilda, Dunedin.
Thomas died in 1919. Sarah died on 30 May 1968, aged 97. They are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
