Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Susannah Jenkins was born in 1844 in Reading, Berkshire, England – the daughter of James Jenkins, a plasterer, and Mary Ann Colburn.

She emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Corona and the following year she married George Hutchings.

They had four children and when Susannah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Cargill Rd, South Dunedin.

George died in 1914 in Dunedin and Susannah died on 2 July 1924 in Christchurch.

They are buried together in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
