Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Janet Ewing was born on 3 December 1852 in Logie, Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of William Ewing, a sailor, and Margaret Anderson.

She emigrated to Otago about 1877 to join other members of her family who had settled in Dunedin.

Janet married Rev William Scorgie on 2 April 1885 at her brother’s home in Elm Row, Dunedin.

They had four children and shortly after their marriage William took charge of the Tapanui Parish where Janet signed the suffrage petition.

In 1894 they moved to Christchurch for five years before coming back to Dunedin and the Mornington Parish in 1899.

Janet died at her home in Dunedin on 23 April 1927 and William died in 1933, they are buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
