Diana Mary Barnes was born in 1852 in Christchurch, Surrey, England – the daughter of Phillip Barnes, a Smith, and Mary Ann Mulligan.
Diana married James Scrivener, a bootmaker, in London in 1872. They had three sons in England, one of whom died in infancy, before they emigrated to New Zealand about 1879.
A further nine children were born after their arrival. When she signed the suffrage petition Diana was living with her family in Neidpath Rd, Dunedin.
Diana died on 24 August 1910 and James died in 1939. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
