Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Bradley was born in 1839 in Derbyshire – daughter of John Bradley, a tailor and Elizabeth Percival. Elizabeth travelled to Otago about 1862 and married Henry Ely Shacklock in Port Chalmers in 1863.

The young couple spent their early years living between Oamaru and Dunedin where they finally settled. They had five children, one dying in infancy.

Henry established a foundry which became a very successful large factory producing coal ranges –  H E Shacklock Ltd. Henry’s sons joined him in the family business and gradually took over the management from him.

In later life Henry suffered from insomnia and depression, in December of 1902, Elizabeth discovered his body hanging from a rope in an outhouse at their residence. The cause of death was 'suicide while in an unsound state of mind.'

Elizabeth died on 20 April 1916, she is buried with her husband in the Oamaru Cemetery.
