Jessie Barrie was born on 15 June 1814 in Dunning , Perthshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Barrie and Mary Aytoun Niven.
She married Edward Shepherd, a coal miner, about 1834 and they had eight children, one who died in infancy.
Edward died in an accident about 1854 and, in 1866, Jessie emigrated to Otago with her youngest son on the William Davie.
Several of her children had emigrated previously and she settled with her family at Waitahuna in South Otago.
She died on 5 April 1896 at Tapanui and is buried with her son Edward in the Tapanui Cemetery.
