Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Mary Ann Quine was born in 1866 in the Isle of Man – the daughter of Robert Quine, a blacksmith, and Jane Callow.
Her mother died about 1871 and the family emigrated to New Zealand around 1880.
They settled in Dunedin where Mary married Alfred Sheridan on 5 July 1883.
They had five children, one who died in infancy and when Mary signed the suffrage petition she was living in McLaggan Street.
In 1909 she petitioned for a divorce. Her evidence said that Alfred “would not work, and took no steps to keep his wife.” Mary had to work to provide for the children and had to live with her father. Around 1904 Alfred said he was going to England to see his mother, “the children went to the train to see him off and that was the last of him.”
He was served the divorce petition in England which was granted.
Mary re-married in 1913 to newsagent George Arthur Marshall.
George died in 1953 and Mary died on 19 May 1954 – they are both buried in the Southern Cemetery.
