Jane Patience Rainton was born in New Zealand in 1859 – the daughter of Joseph Rainton, a baker, and Jane Bruton.

Jane married James Beveridge Simpson, a salesman, in 1882 and they had 11 children.

When Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in York Place, Dunedin.

She died at her home on 15 April 1918 and James died in 1934. They are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
