Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Barbara Cowie was born about 1823 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
She married Andrew Smart, a railway labourer, on 9 December 1854 in Turriff and they had five children, one who died in infancy.
In 1879 Barbara and Andrew, accompanied by their youngest son, emigrated to Otago on the Timaru. Their older children appear to have already arrived in the country.
When Barbara signed the suffrage petition they were living in Lawrence St, Mornington, Dunedin and Andrew was working as a gardener.
Barbara died at her home on 8 July 1893 and Andrew died at their daughter’s home in Waitati in 1899 – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
