Mary Louisa Bach was born about 1842 in Derbyshire, England – the daughter of Thomas Bach, a farmer, and Sarah Hinckley.
She married Nathaniel Smith, a draper, in 1877 in Croydon, London.
Their son Sydney was born the year after their marriage and appears to be their only child.
The family came to New Zealand in the late 1880s and settled in Dunedin.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Six St, Opoho.
Nathaniel died in 1928 and Mary died on 17 July 1939, they are buried with their son in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
