Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Petrie Hope McGlashan was born on 1 December 1839 in Edinburgh, Scotland – the daughter of Donald McGlashan, a grocer, and Helen Sanderson.

She emigrated to Otago in the 1860s where she married William Williams, a widower and bootmaker, in October 1867.

What happened to William is a mystery.

Petrie re-married as a widow in Dunedin in September 1879 to, barman, Robert James Stedwell.

Robert married as a widower but appears to have left a wife and daughter in New South Wales.

They lived in Dunedin and when Petrie signed the suffrage petition they were living in Castle Street.

Petrie died on 17 February 1914 and Robert died in 1916 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
