Jane Anderson was born about 1837 in Montrose, Angus, Scotland.
She married widower James Strachan on 14 November 1866 in Montrose and they had six children before Jane and the children emigrated to Otago in 1877 on the James Nicol Fleming, James had presumably worked his passage.
They settled in Port Chalmers where their youngest child died in 1878 and their last child was born in 1879.
James died in 1885 he is buried with two of their daughter in the Port Chalmers Cemetery.
When Jane signed the suffrage petition she was living with some of her children in Leith St, Dunedin.
She died at her daughter’s home in Dunedin on 12 September 1904 and is buried with her daughter in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
